Dear Colleagues and friends,
We decided to organize the ACUT ’08 Course and Congress because the urinary
stone active treatment has seen a radical change during the latest 20 years.
Nowadays less than 5% of urolithiasis is treated by open surgery while the rest is
cured by extracorporeal and intracorporeal lithotripsy and recently laparoscopy
debuted on the stone treatment scene.
Urological endoscopy has achieved a primary role in urolithiasis treatment thanks to
the miniaturization of instruments , the introduction of new sources of energy for
lithotripsy, the extreme make over of optical imaging.
All these evolutions allow modern Urologists to propose and perform minimally
invasive treatments. Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) has been introduced -
mostly simultaneously in Europe and USA - in the early 80’ as the first minimally
invasive treatment for renal lithiasis and then has been “frozen” because of the
clinical employment of supposedly even less invasive techniques.
PCNL role has been restored through the years and nowadays should be
considered an important part of the urological background in the treatment of
complex urolithiasis. Recently we all witnessed a new interest to PCNL into the
International Literature dealing with many aspects of the procedure and new
concepts have been proposed for the pre, intra and post operative management of
the patient.
ACUT 2008 Congress aim is to review the technical, theoretical and applicative
aspects of PCNL by gathering Opinion Leaders in the field from Europe and USA in
the University Teaching Hospital S.Paolo to offer the chance to check the latest
innovations of instruments in the Urolab sessions, to observe and discuss the
surgical details in the live surgery sessions and to listen to the hot news in the field
in the Meet the Expert session.
We hope to see you in Milan and we are sure that the Congress will offer you a very
good occasion to be introduced to the PCNL World if you are a beginner or to have
a very fruitful face to face with Opinion Leaders in the field if you are an Expert.
